Rupert met Anesia one serendipitous day on Commercial Drive, in East Vancouver. Like so many of his collaborations it spawned from the artistic meeting ground of cafe deux soleils. Instantly having a friendly spark, they soon collaborated at the Stew Jams- a monthly, improvised music night sharing hip-hop culture. Since then, the two have busked together, played community gigs, featured at local shows and recorded 2 projects - Veganese Folk-Hop Volume 1 and 2.
As a duo, the Art warriors are know to blend phat Hip-hop drum styles with folk-picking, strummy hooks and jazz influenced chord progressions. Often doing a freestyle dance break-down, Rupert will also bust out spoken word and rap-poetry over top of the sparse musical compositions or tap into some falsetto crooning. Anesia provides extra percussion such as rain stick, clave and shakers to some tunes, and adds in her deeply soulful voice as harmonic texture when the track calls for it.
An East Van underground legend, Dave Taylor has played at pretty much every festival in BC and is a go to bassist or guitar player for live hip-Hop acts in Vancouver. He lends his talents to Rupert's music and blesses the scene with his genius.
Pending the Covid-19 scenario, The Art Warriors will aim to play some shows in Montreal and Toronto, as a part of the Art Warrior Tour in August 2020. Until then... it's music video creation time.
